It is quiet this morning in the Canyon.
A faint hint of jazz music from inside drifts towards my ears, a few morning people chat quietly nearby, sipping their Starbucks brewed coffee. The warm sun beats down, changing the air from a chill 40 degrees back to the upper 60s. Empty chairs are laid out by the pool waiting for those who are not intimidated by the cool weather, yet those who attend the ritual of the pool sit in the sunlight, wrapped in blankets, not daring to touch the smooth face of the water nor ripple the bubbles of the jacuzzi.
Nearby winding trails lead deeper into the desert, past beautiful flowers, bewitching cactus and view of mountains far away yet near. I have run the trails and seen the glory of the brilliant sunset and gentler sunrise. I have dipped into a chilly pool only to numb my body with the coldness of the water and warmed it again with the soft bubbles nearby. I have walked at night watching the stars twinkle above and sat out in the sunlight, turning darker and tanner. I have enjoyed the rich food, a blend of southwestern and southern spice, I have slept on a bed of clouds and yet do not feel ready to pass this up.
There are moments in life when we do more for ourselves, when we find exactly what we are looking for during those brief moments. For me travel brings adventure, the world of the unknown, a taste of spontaneity and surprise, the knowledge that yes, I can do this. Enjoy the views from the Catalina Foothills and one day you might find yourself wandering these trails.
