Today’s Guest Blog is by Monica Miller, she is an author, speaker, coach and avid writer at www.monicawrites.com.
Are you staring at a wall that is laughing at you when you want to write your blog post or write inside of your book? And that wall is so high and so intimidating!
Your message is important and you want to share it, to allow your voice to be heard by others who will resonate with you, but this block, it’s like the Grand Canyon right now! And the only thing around you to build a bridge is brittle sticks from dead-looking desert trees.
How do you overcome writer’s block? How do you woo creativity to come back to you?
Today, I want to show you tips to bring creativity back, knocked down the laughing wall, and build a strong bridge to cross over writer’s block canyon!
Walk away for a time.
Sometimes we think so hard about what we want to say, that our minds cannot bring any creativity in. As an author of three books, I have had my fair share of writer’s block and I have discovered that sometimes walking away from my writing project is the best thing I can do for myself.
It seems when I walk away, I allow my mind to focus on other things for a time and that allows space for my brain to come up with some pretty awesome stuff for my book, blog, social media and more! Just take a few days off your project and trust that the ideas will come to you when they wish.
Write in a journal.
How many of you used to write in a journal almost daily? How many of you do so now?
I’ve always had a journal while growing up and I stopped once I hit college. I tried to pick it back up after I got married, but always failed.
Back in June, I found a book called the Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod and he talked about how he journals every morning. So I started my own journaling journey where I write almost every day now.
The floodgates opened for me once I began journaling! I’ve been writing a fantasy novel for the last six years and I could never get past the fifth chapter. Now, I have more ideas than I know what to do with! I actually forget the ideas I come up with now that the gates have broken off and ideas are always pouring in!
Journaling doesn’t have to take long, I journal for 10 minutes every morning. I set my timer on and I write what I’m grateful for, my goals, and lessons I’m learning before I write about anything else. Try that for a month and see if ideas come flooding to you!
Read a book.
This shouldn’t be hard for you if you’re an avid writer. I have found when I hit writer’s block and I don’t know which direction I want to go in, I will read a book related to the same genre I’m writing in.
For example, as I mentioned above, I am writing a fantasy novel and I felt like it was getting boring and I needed to place action in it. But I didn’t know what to do. I began reading a fantasy novel and since it was full of action, it gave me ideas on what I could do to spice things up in my own book.
Now I have battle scenes full of action for my book which I’m pretty excited about! Sometimes you need help from the authors who have made it to discover what you yourself can do for your own book, blog or other writing piece.
If you’re struggling with writer’s block, I challenge you to take a few minutes and decide what you’re going to do today to get past it; are you going to read a book or put your writing project down for a time? Share in the comments below as we all need clarity and accountability from time to time in our writing journey!
