In early November, I had the opportunity to attend Christy Wright’s Business Boutique, a conference for women who are starting and building their businesses. While it was exciting to be surrounded by 3,000+ women all with entrepreneurial mindsets, it was also a blessing to learn from people who started with nothing. It’s encouraging to know that all it takes is an idea, and from there you have to be consistent with what you put out into the world.

On the first day of the conference, I met Lori Chittam, Owner and Designer of Simply Beautiful by LC. Lori started out like many of us did. She went to the right college, got a great job, and started working her way up in a traditional career. She had it all, the awesome husband, two lovely children, but, as she found out, having a family and being forced to be away from them for hours and hours every single day can be tough. Lori discovered she wanted more time with her family, and in order to make that happen, she quit her job.

Quitting your job gives you time, time to focus on what you really want to do and how to shape your life moving forward. As Lori had that time with her children she started putting positive messages on the wall to encourage herself in her journey. Lori knows the true power of mindset, and if you surround yourself with things that encourage, inspire, and lift you up, you’ll start putting those kinds of things out into the world.

As she created her artwork, she realized she had something right in front of her. A business. And Simply Beautiful by LC was born.

What I love about Lori’s artwork is the fact that she doesn’t just create printables (although you can certainly get those if you’d like). She creates custom quotes that she’ll also frame and mail to you. But what truly stands out is the fact that she uses real gold foil in her designs, which makes these designs actually shine.

Angela: Where did you get the idea for Simply Beautiful?

Lori: When I first became a parent, I struggled quite a bit as most new moms do. I started as a working mom, working a full-time job where I felt like I had no time with my family, to being a full-time stay at home mom with two boys. When I had my second son I was completely lost in my life.

I always felt as if there wasn’t enough time or energy to be there for my kids the way I “should” be. I remember, I would sit in church on Sundays (my one time just to sit, listen, and do NOTHING), and the speaker would say something really encouraging and I would think, “that would have really helped me…yesterday!”

So I started to line my walls with these little 3×3 pieces of paper with inspirational quotes on them. They were not very pretty, but I really needed to surround myself with these positive thoughts to get me through my crazy days. In doing this exercise I discovered that I am truly the maker of my own happiness, my kids will not make me happy, my husband will not make me happy, even a successful career will not make me happy. I am the one that has to get up every day and decide to be happy, it is my responsibility to myself, my family, and those around me.

Although the 3×3 cards worked well for what I needed, as an Interior designer, I really like for things to look beautiful, not just function well. So I started turning those 3×3 cards into gold foil prints, and artwork using real glitter, and that’s where the idea for Simply Beautiful By LC was born.

I actually collaborated with my sister for the name Simply Beautiful By LC (she is the one who brought up the idea of creating a business, which I initially thought was CRAZY). We wanted to combine the simplicity of positive thinking with the beauty of design. I liked “by LC” because it can either stand for Lori Chittam, or Lori and Crystal in case my sister ever wanted to join me in this adventure. It is my mission at Simply Beautiful By LC to offer high quality, handmade art that brings positivity to your chaotic day.

Angela: What’s been on of your biggest challenges with creating and running your shop?

Lori: My biggest challenge would have to be the details behind running a shop online. I currently do not have a brick and mortar store, so a lot of what I do is behind a computer screen. Being a very social person, I learned quickly that I need to find a way to get out and be with people, which is part of the reason I attended business boutique. When starting a small online business you can get so lost in your computer screen dealing with marketing, social media, SEO, etc. I have to remind myself that in order to serve and help people, I need to interact with people:)

Angela: What is one of your favorite inspirational quotes for new entrepreneurs?

Lori: My favorite quote was actually a custom quote that someone came to the shop with. “She knows in her quiet center where God dwells that he finds her Beautiful, has deemed her Worthy, and in Him, she is Enough.” As a mompreneur, it is so easy to fall into the trap of not feeling like you are enough to the people around you. Am I giving enough to my kids, husband, friendships, my business. Am I even worthy enough to raise little humans into respectable adults while keeping my sanity? LOL. I need this reminder ALOT.
